This is the third book in a trilogy and will be best enjoyed if you've read the other two beforehand. As with Cat's previous books, the romance is one with class differences; Lord Courtenay, scoundrel and rake, is a peer of the realm, while Julian Medlock, utterly respectable and proper, is a common man who has made his fortune in trade and his reputation through years of very deliberate social climbing.Courtenay is a man who has seen and done everything (and everyone), and even his title has not protected his respectability. He is broke and denied being able to see his nephew Simon, the only child of his deceased sister, because of his bad reputation.Julian's sister enlists him to help Courtenay regain some small degree of respectability so that he might see his nephew again. Julian, who has harbored an attraction to Courtenay for years, is reluctant but ultimately agrees to help. The story moves along nicely in pace. Julian is not so staid, nor Courtenay so dissipated, as either appears at first glance. The romance avoids insta-love, instead developing gradually, in a way that is convincing. The biggest obstacle for the two is communication, which results in causing most of the conflict they must overcome in order to be together.Cat (and her heroes) are cognizant of the dangers of being queer during this era, but it is not lingered over, and "gay angst" is never used as a plot device, either. Using either as such would be lazy writing. Her heroes know who they are and accept it; class differences (in a time and place where social class meant a very great deal), poor communication, and other such things are the basis of their troubles. Both Julian and Courtenay grow a lot on this story - they learn more about themselves, each other, and what it takes to build a relationship that will last. "The Ruin of a Rake" follows the patterns we know and love in Avon historicals, but the lovers both being men adds a new dimension and dynamic to the familiar. The end result is fresh, engaging, touching, delightful... and, of course, wonderfully romantic.

The Ruin of a Rake is Cat Sebastian’s third novel published in less than a year. I also own both of her other books, and I enjoyed them immensely. I spent my holiday in a leisurely fashion, and this was the perfect book to read while lounging. Like her other two novels, this is a m/m Regency story.Julian Medlock is convinced that dissolute Lord Courtenay is corrupting his sister. Eleanor assures Julian that Courtenay is just a friend, and then asks him to help improve Courtenay’s reputation. Julian likes things in his life to be neat, orderly, and predictable. Courtenay is the complete opposite, and Julian is reluctant to have anything to do with someone who is so different.Courtenay knows that his very presence bothers Julian, but he doesn’t care. In fact, Courtenay deliberately provokes the staid Julian just to see his reaction. It doesn’t seem like these two could possibly have anything common, but as they begin to spend time together, they both discover a strong mutual attraction. The Ruin of a Rake is an amazing book. There is just the right amount of angst, especially after the revelation of a regrettable secret. Julian is a moderating influence on Courtenay, and Courtenay helps Julian step outside of his comfort zone. They have great chemistry together, but they have to be very discreet because of the legal ramifications of the era, and Sebastian addresses these issues in a very clever way. Also, I spent a semester in college doing an independent study on gothic novels, so I appreciated the inclusion of an original gothic novel in this book! Oh, and there are tons of cats as well!I would absolutely recommend The Ruin of a Rake. This book is loosely connected to Sebastian’s previous novels, but it functions well as a standalone. That said, if you haven’t read her previous books, you really ought to do yourself a favor and read them either before or after this one. Sebastian is truly a gifted writer with a knack for characterization and redemptive arcs. I am already looking forward to her next book- it’s going to be a long five months!
