I wanted to like this. Interesting premise. Good writing. More about character and nothing violent or sexual. However it quickly got boring. I just read Loneliest Girl in the World about a teen stuck on a spaceship by herself. It was more readable. The problem here is the flashbacks. They are pointless when you know everyone is dead except her--not a spoiler. I think it could have been more researched too. That said the actual words, the writing, was very good as far as the character goes, the description too. I might give this author one more try on that I was curious enough to skim all the way to the end.
The story does not follow a "standard" plot but does give a satisfactory cheerful ending that begs for a sequel. It handles profound disappointment and leads to a bright future. I wish I could tell the reader that "the butler did it" but do not wish to spoil the plot. The characters are well developed and sympathetic. There is no cartoon black and white but realistic handling of events.
Well.... Honestly - I give five stars for the title! I have a friend who shares the protagonist’s name, and so was doubly intrigued, so took a chance. The beginning of the book gave me a chuckle, as the character also shared a few traits with my friend. As to the story and writing, this was, for me at least, a decent read. The majority of the novel focuses on survival in the post apocalyptic world. I was hoping for more ‘action’.... the author steps it up in the latter part of the book, and wraps things up fairly well. It’s an ok read. YMMV as always.
I have to admit- I was a little weary of this one. Okay, okay.... I’m just not a fan of the title. It’s a little campy and juvenile for my taste. But I gave it a shot because the plot sounded interesting and WOW, I’m so glad I did!I rarely find a book that’s truly fun for me to read, but this one really was. I loved being in Joanna’s head and getting to know her. The story was so low on dialogue and so internal that I felt I truly understood her by the end of the book.I was so eager to figure out what happens in his book that I’ll admit, I ignored a lot of my actual life obligations to get through it!What a great read! For the first time in a long while, I’m hoping for a sequel!
Really enjoyed this book. Never read the author before but plan to read more by her. The main character is believable despite being a person very far from my view point. To say that I would not have done as well as she is to highly overestimate my actions. Still enjoyed reading it so much i didn't take a single break. I'd laud it more but I really need to get to the restroom!
The writing was well done, the characters were interesting and well-developed. The author kept up the suspense until the end. I liked that the protagonist or main character was a young girl who struggled alone to survive until she was finally reunited with her team. The concept of the end of the world via comet was believable and consequences of starting anew with next to nothing and the trials and tribulations that followed were realistic. I feel the ending was a bit brief and would have like the author to follow up on what happened after meeting up with other survivors. Aside from that, I fully enjoyed this novel.
The premise of being potentially the sole survivor of an apocalyptic event that threatens to wipe out all human life on earth was intriguing and the author delivered a fast paced story. The interweaving of the events leading up to 18 year old Joanna Murphy being placed in cryogenic suspension and her experiences after she awakens 200 years later is done seamlessly and set the scene for what follows when she (eventually) emerges from the bunker. Suspense was maintained from the first chapter and, if solutions to the problems Joanna encountered were a little too neat, the unresolved ending sets the scene for a sequel.The fast pace was helped by not getting bogged down in technical details and keeping the focus on Joanna and what she was experiencing. Highly readable - I finished the book in a day.
It was well written. Good plot and character development especially for this genre which is why it gets a 5. There were not glaring editing issues, of course, I'll be the first to admit English was not my best subject. She could do a sequel. Be interesting to see how it all develops though it seems to me not enough people left for real genetic diversity. Anyway good read
