In Orwell's "1984" Big Brother controlled everyone by pairing down the English language and altering the meanings of words. Who knew that the future would be far more insidious when it came to controlling the beliefs of the population.Clint Watts does an excellent job of pointing the problems, summarizing when, where and how our hacker and trolls are manipulating what you think and believe by parading a series of false claims as well as setting up websites designed to cause chaos among the world. If anything, Watts has identified the enemy and sometimes it's us, sometimes it's them but always they are trying to corrode the belief in our institutions of government by making us doubt them even more than usual; creating a toxic environment where a president can erode our legitimate news organizations if there's something that the president doesn't like; attacking individuals and their integrity in online and twitter rants again designed to misinform those who don't bother checking the source.Watts comes up with some interesting suggestions for solutions but the primary focus here is how we got into this mess in the first place. Facebook has certainly played a large role, for example, in deliberate misinformation by hackers and trolls but, outside of the bogus information that is passed on as "news" (they are thinly veiled editorials making up facts to support some extreme agenda--one example of this would be the claim that the democratic party was running a child pornography ring out of a pizza parlor to do political damage--designed to further divide a nation that already has to deal with politicians who can't run the country.Watts also covers the use of the internet for recruitment of terrorists and hate groups allowing each to create their own little corner of the internet where they can instruct deluded individuals into fighting for their cause.
This is the most important book I have read in recent years. I have learned more from it than any other I have come across. I highly recommend it to anyone with interest in understanding jihadi terrorists, or reasons for growing polarization in the American electorate, or how social media platforms have influenced modern societies, or why the Trump presidency might be damaging to our democratic institutions and the actual strength of our country...or for many other interests that fall in and around those named. I caution readers not to skip parts of the book, as the whole adds up to more than the sum of its parts. It is a book written for those with an open mind, and for those who might enjoy engaging ideas with an open mind. I hope it will be recognized as a seminal work that will acquire wide readership and influence. I too would like to see the world a better place.
Both fascinating and frightening, Watts’ book is a compelling look at how the internet and its power to enable the misuse of social media have transformed and threatened America in ways that are insidious but, as the author suggests in a closing chapter, not invulnerable. His accounts of how terrorists used the web to build ISIS are revealing but not as chilling as the dangers that lie closer to home thanks to the power social media gives those adept at promoting their version of the truth. The antidote? In closing Watts suggests that “leaders must emerge and civil society must be rebuilt on the ground, not online.â€Congressional candidates, please take note!
Clinton Watts has written an interesting, useful, and important book here. His narrative approach is itself interesting, as it has linear and non-linear elements to it that blend well and keep building information connections nicely, even if decades have passed between events that are fundamentally linked. This is the heart of synthesis, and Watts is a synthesis thinker of the highest order. He finds and reveals connections, which makes him the perfect intelligence officer and consultant, I'll bet.An excellent read that will make it clear to you how corrosive our media space has become for Western values, peace, and civil society. Also, how aggressive Russia is in cyberspace, waging a hidden war on the West for more than a decade now, one that is only escalating (for instance, we now are urged to reboot our routers to thwart Russian malware attacks, a clear escalation of their cyberwar). Watts shows how Putin and his cronies keep probing for resistance and, meeting little, escalate their attacks incrementally.Recommend.
If you love our democracy then you’d better read this book. After reading the latest books by Generals Hayden and Clapper, and Malcom Nance, I came to Clint Watts. A person not unknown to me either. But, am blown away by the book. He knows of what he speaks from being in the trenches (with his laptop), sitting at the conference tables, and, frankly, giving a damn. Best book of its kind to come out this year. Detailed, thorough, to the point, and frightening. Get it.
