Although I love to read, I've been so busy that I don't have that much time to pick up a book lately!!! Relics of Saint Padre Pio had come to the church I attend in Los Angeles, California in Saint Peter and Saint Paul's Catholic Church. In the past I have attended the special mass and presentation about Saint Padre Pio which left me walking away very inspired. I have a particular patient in my pediatrics unit. These days, when I look at him I realize more and more that he himself in a miracle. When he was 5 years old the original diagnosis for him was that he was going to end up in a mental institution. In fact, it turns out that the doctor was truly incorrect. Fast forward to the future, that boy is now a 34 year old adult working within a sheltered organization. Reading Pray, Hope and Don't Worry, opened my mind and heart through all of the stories within in. The book is so well compiled, that I was able to read one story at a time. Before, I knew it, I was hooked on reading the entire book and had finished it. I highly recommend it to anyone who has, knows of or comes in contact with someone with any type of physical, emotional or mental disability. After reading his book, the reader will come away with a stronger faith and believe in miracles of the lord working through Padre Pio.
What an amazing book!! Reading this book was one of the graces of my life. I consider Padre Pio to be my spiritual father and reading the testimonies and the unimaginable miracles not only developed my faith in him, it has strengthened my spiritual experience in knowing and loving Christ through one's sufferings. Padre Pio loved Christ through his sufferings. He was a man of great virtues. He was modest, pure, gentle, humble, submissive to his superiors, charitable. He imitated Christ in every way and through his stigmata too. This book is not just for the Catholics, but for every skeptical non-Catholic Christian. 2 takeaways for me from this book would be to practice self-denial and penance
Arrived fast! Wonderful wonderful reading about the greatest Saint ever, in my opinion. I still have a hard time believing that I actually lived and breathed the same time as this great Saint. He died 7 days before my 14th birthday. I read about so many Saints who lived hundreds of years ago and for God to have sent this humble friar to give people faith to get through both 20th century world wars is amazing. I picked up the only Padre Pio prayer booklet in our church after Mass, no one around but me, I thought. As I picked it up to look through it, a little old man came up behind me and with pride in his voice told me "I SAW him." I just said "Really." thinking this priest probably came to Denver or the Springs and he saw him there. I had not a clue who Padre Pio was! I now deeply regret not asking this man where he saw him, after watching the dvd Padre Pio Miracle Man 10 years later and finding out he never left San Giovanni Rotundo! So now, after reading volumes 1 and 2 of Pray, Hope and Don't Worry, I can only assume the little old man was one of the soldiers who attended Padre Pio's Masses!
This is a compilation of witnesses to Padre Pio's life. These stories of people who knew Padre Pio, who received healings and miracles and direction from Padre Pio, or who lived near him, or who worked with him, are truly superb and astounding. I thought I already knew all about him. If you have read a biography of his life, this is the NEXT PHASE!!! Though I have read everything I could find on him, I was still surprised when I read this book! Diane Allen has done an excellent and beautiful job of capturing the man as he was through the eyes of those who knew him. Awesome reading. Padre Pio had a high regard for the American soldiers from WWII. Whenever one of them arrived to attend the Padre's Mass, they were ushered to the very front, much to their surprise. It was by the Padre's design. He loved Americans, and he thought they were very generous.
I am a big fan of Padre Pio - he teaches me so much about the character of Jesus. Having read several books on him, including the first book by Diane Allen, I wasn't sure how much new info would be available. Alas, this doesn't disappoint. It is a substantial work at 400+ pages. It isn't dry but could best be read one chapter at a time in order to absorb the rich facts & details about St. Pio and the life he lived. Clearly Ms. Allen put a lot of time into this book and it is well worth a read.
The first look will throw you off thinking that it's such a thick book and how much time is going to take to read it. However, the book is extremely well organised into themes like confessor etc. Also in each chapter, the stories are very well written and straight to the point. You don't have to read the whole book even though there's a part 1 and 2 to it. Just go straight to the chapters that you are interested in which makes reading enjoyable.
I was worried that I might not like this book as it was recommended to me.. I have heard a lot about St.Pio but didn't know what sort of person he was.. The author starts off with a short summary of him but then gets into the detail of his life once he entered the Seminary or order of Monks. This is not only very informative but its written in such a way that it's down to earth and in every day language. St.Pio has written himself about a lot of his suffering days and days of humility and days of doubt as well as understanding of his life and the order of the life of a Monk. He followed Gods law to the letter and suffered for others.. Understanding all this is what the book is all about and I have learned much about God and ST.Pio in this book...Believe me it's well worth the read.. I still go back and read different chapters..Hope this helps, Betty
