About the Author

I was just three years old when my mother took me to a book signing on Robertson Blvd. in Los Angeles. A man was seated at a small table and well-dressed women milled around him. The book was "Manners Can Be Fun," with its bright yellow cover, and soon was joined by the Watchbird series. What sticks in my mind was the dreaded statement, "This is a watchbird watching you. Were you a good child this month?" Ugh. I can't imagine a young child today being inspired by such baloney.
I bought this as a gift for my sister, now a grandmother. Our mom had the original of this book, circa 1950s, and it was a humorous way to teach manners and more importantly the beginnings of empathy and kindness. When a plate of cookies was put on the table, we all remembered Greedy Grabalot, and took just one. Reccommend. Hope its still in print for my grandson when he is old enough to get the message of this book (Ah, the terrible twos!!!)
I love the message and my kids (3 and 5) find it credible and engaging, so it's a win all around. I find the illustrations (which are either done by a 5 year old or an adult as talented an artist as I am) painful but I give the text 6 out of 5 stars so when I take a star off for the over-the-top illustrations we're still at 5/5 ;)Kids who have greater access to exclusively modern media with intense graphics may not be able to relate to the material: the graphics are a big hurdle and the text is pretty dated too. I'm sure an updated version would be even more engaging for my kids but what it lacks in exciting, current graphics it makes up for in specificity and clarity for my two.
A lot of people in this country right now could benefit from reading this book.

I grew up with M Leaf books and knew the author as neighbor and friend of my parents in the 1950's. It delighted me to see his books popular again after all these years. My parents had framed a signed drawing for my brother Billy Harding. I gave the autographed drawing and a copy of MANNERS CAN BE FUN to my grandson for Christmas. At 13, he enjoys family history and stories and was very excited to have such a significant gift. Yes, manners are fun.
"Manners Can Be Fun" covers basics like introductions, please and thank you, being responsible in the home you live in and table manners. It's the illustrations, however, which get the point across and hit the reader over the head. No matter your age, the cute drawings really let one see what others experience when you behave badly.The basics of what's important in life are put into perspective and appreciated all over again. Playing, saying "hello" and so many other topics pertinent to etiquette and consideration are placed on Mr. Leaf's pages in quick, precise prose which encourage action.Munro Leaf's description of The Noisey's, The Pigs, Me First, Whineys, Smash, Rip, Ruin and others assist young and old of what to do around others and what not to do. It's basic, it's short and sweet, it's truly a classic. Like all classics, "Manners Can Be Fun" has not gone out of style. Many thanks to Universe Publishing for placing this wonderful book back on the shelves and into our hands.
What a cute book! I bought it for my 2 and 3 year old boys. We are attempting to teach them simple, common manners in a fun way and they love learning through books. Manners Can Be Fun presents manners in a simple, easy to understand, engaging way. The boys enjoy reading this book and it's a great way to have positive conversations about specific situations they experience daily like sharing toys, picking up after themselves, whining, meal time. It's a fun book!
