“This book is a prescription for mental wellness that has no bad side effects. Walking, like drawing, is a human activity that calms the brain and induces insight. . . . Buy several copies--you’ll be handing this book out to friends.” (Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain)“In presenting respectable research and scholarship on how the mundane-seeming, everyday activity of walking balances the brain’s laterality, Thom Hartmann brings a scholar’s concentration to his subject, a storyteller’s sense of enchantment, and a humanitarian’s concern with the issues that matter.” (Stephen Larsen, author of The Healing Power of Neurofeedback)“Thom Hartmann’s work with bilateral movement is a fascinating and important contribution to holistic healing modalities and a timely tool for healing many crises of our modern times.” (James Endredy, author of Ecoshamanism and Earthwalks for Body and Spirit)

HEALTH / HEALING “This book is a prescription for mental wellness that has no bad side effects. Walking, like drawing, is a human activity that calms the brain and induces insight. . . . Buy several copies--you’ll be handing this book out to friends.” --Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Our bodies usually heal rapidly from an illness, injury, or wound. Yet our minds and hearts often suffer for years with debilitating symptoms of distress or upset. Why is it so hard for our minds and hearts to heal? One simple key to healing them can be just a short walk away. Walking--a bilateral therapy that has been a part of human life throughout history--allows people to heal emotionally as quickly as they do physically. Normally the brain converts our daily experiences into long-term memories. However, a traumatic experience can become “stuck” in the brain, unable to be stored as “memory” and persisting in the brain as if it were still a present-time event. Thom Hartmann explains that when we walk, which engages both sides of the body, we simultaneously activate both the left and right sides of the brain. This allows the brain’s two hemispheres to join forces to break up brain patterning and allow the sufferer to release these distresses--from extreme but brief upsets to chronic conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. To achieve these results, Hartmann shows how we must learn to walk consciously, holding an awareness of the distress (or desire we hope to attain) in mind as we move. Using a variety of case studies, he demonstrates that it is possible to dissolve the rigidity of a traumatic memory or negative mind state in as little as a half hour’s time. His techniques have proven successful in helping to alleviate rage resulting from a domestic dispute as well as the chronic traumas soldiers experience during war that are often locked away for decades. While the physical benefits of walking have long been recognized, its importance in promoting and maintaining mental health has only recently been rediscovered. Hartmann’s deceptively simple, yet potent exercises allow us to create our own walking journeys to restore our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being as well as rejuvenate our body’s health. THOM HARTMANN is the award-winning, bestselling author of over a dozen books, including The Edison Gene, The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight, and Attention Deficit Disorder: A Different Perception. His groundbreaking work in ADD/ADHD and psychotherapy has been featured in TIME magazine, the New York Times, and in media around the world. He lives in Oregon.

It was just as difficult to deal with trauma in ancient times as it is today. The difference is the type and kinds that have now evolved, added to many of those that have always been, creates a festering turmoil within, that becomes a destructive force. I believe that everything revolves around the "Law of Cause and Effect", and that you can't really eliminate an effect unless you take away the cause. In pursing that effort you must first gain understanding. Thom's book gives that opportunity in a very easy read type of presentation, and shares what he has learned. Understanding leads to knowledge so that you can implement a way forward as is outlined in the book. Everything in life is a process, some results cause suffering, others bring joy. This book gives a process to change some of the effects of our sufferings, by eliminating the pain that is associated with them. The cause still remains but is changed in the way it is perceived, and so the effect remains but is changed in the way it manifests and makes us feel. This is the process of changing poison into medicine. I think Thom is a brilliant man. I buy and read his books, as well as listening to him daily on WCPT AM Radio. I have had the pleasure of meeting him at a book signing and he is very genuine and sincere in all aspects. I wish this book would be given to our Veterans at the time of discharge. I believe the suicide rate among them would drop dramatically.

I met Thom Hartmann in St. Paul a few years ago. He spoke at a church that day. Though I am one year older than he is, he is one of my true cultural heroes. Check his internet site, all his varied books, etc. What a genius! I think he should hire me to do something. Currently, I live in St. Peter, Minnesota. I do get around, though. I love to walk fields and hike mountains. Walking your Blues Away gave me insights on why I felt so good after a long walk about, be it in the Midwest, Colorado, California shoreline, wherever. The only writer who has taught me more is Thomas Moore with his soulful books. Thanks to both. They call me Lucky, too.

Seems I really needed this. Every few days I look to my past and remember an unresolved memory, like BAD bosses--then hit the road. Time, of course helps, but I take no chances and I am clearing up each disturbing memory. This really works. I tried tapping (EFT) but I prefer this. I have read elsewhere that this technique can also help with creativity and sorting out current issues. After my past is taken care of, I will try my current and future life, the positive events to come.

Good to have this proven technique presented in a way that a person can do it for themselves. It is a very successful technique that normally is done in a therapist office. It does work and good to have more people learn about it. A good way to dilute the importance of any specific memory that you wish you didn't keep thinking about.

I enjoy Thom on television. This is the first book of his. My very depressed son now goes out walking every possible day. He still says he hates being outside, but he likes going for walks. He is so much easier to have around now. He's 21.

Concisely written, easily understood, and it makes sense. Like Servetus, pioneers in psychology were thwarted when they were onto the answers.Thank goodness it hasn't taken 400 years for someone to see this. Thom has made me realize I'm in Oz and I be had the way to get home all along. Intuitively, I know this therapy will work. Between therapy and self help strategies which have been as damaging as helpful, I know what doesn't work. I think this will be easy to implement. I'll follow up in a week.

This book has been a life changer in my world of teaching at my seminars to other Chiropractic doctors,, and personally now understanding even more the truth about our bodies ability to walk ourselves to better mental and emotional health. This is natures way for self healing through bilateral coordinated activities..I am so delighted with the author of this book, and his latest gifts to us at this time. Thank you for your research in writing this excellent book.I recommend it highly.Arthur Faygenholtz DC

The worst that can happen as result of adopting this practice is that one will become more fit and sleep better. I suspect bilateral approaches have therapeutic benefits but would have to dig deeper into the literature to make that claim. In any event, only good can come from this approach and in any event would be beneficial adjunct to any other therapy.
