At first I felt like I'd been side-swiped, because I picked this up in the interest of finding a book on the Erie Canal. But that's only a portion of its subjects; it's mostly about the religious fervor and conflict surrounding it in early 19th C New York State. While I didn't really buy the book for that, I'm astonished at what I've learned. We all know the early colonists of Massachusetts and New England were intolerant of those who held different beliefs, but this book demonstrates that exclusionary feelings continued much longer. There were Masons, and anti-Masons -- and murder over sharing secrets; Mormonism and the hounding its adherents faced; revivalists; more contained old-school congregations. And they no only looked askance at each other, they sometimes got involved in religious persecution: raping the unwanted, killing them, and driving them out of town. And yes, there is considerable discussion of the Erie Canal: the challenges it faced in persuading the effort to begin; building the locks necessary due to the changes in elevation from Niagara to Albany; the commerce which grew as a result of the more economical transportation; the businesses which grew alongside it, not just to take advantage of the transportation but to service the people passing through.I do have a complaint, about the organization. It is difficult to expect what you will encounter in any chapter or the next; it is difficult to say, simply, what the prior chapter was about. Each chapter seems more or less episodic, and not very cohesive. As a reader you will be more or less there for the ride.
The other reviewers said that the book had too much about Joseph Smith...well, yeah, probably. It is about 1/3 about him, and about 1/3 about the Erie Canal, and about 1/3 about the religious scam artists of the 1820's-1840s including stuff on Shakers, 7th day Adventist leaders, revivalists, etc. and the "murder" mystery is about the Masons...Its a mishmash of topics, but it holds your attention all the way through and although it doesn't seem to have a bent or point, it is interesting. I am not a Mormon, but if I was, the stuff on Smith would be really discouraging. I have now read 3 full books and one partial on Smith, and in every one he comes out a flim-flam guy, a con-artist, a philanderer, and maybe a charlatan...he never reads like the kind of guy you want starting your religion...I guess I need to hone in on Brigham and see if he has fewer skeletons in the closet, or not. It does seem that many religions were founded on very flawed people, some with ulterior motives, some delusional, some dedicated. Of course, since there are no first-hand accounts of Muhammad or Christ and who knows Buddha, maybe they fare better , so maybe that is it, or maybe the faith can overcome the originator. Maybe People's Temple without Jim Jones might have been okay, or Waco without Koresh...but that is another whole topic
I clearly did not read the description of this book closely enough (my fault) as it is heavy on the religious upheavals of the time, as compared with discussion about the canal itself. I was thinking I was getting a book entirely about the canal building and subsequent impact, but again, a lot of the book is devoted to the growth of certain groups such as the Mormons, and the canal serves more as a backdrop for the times. That is not to say this is not an interesting book as long as your expectations of the content are appropriate going in.
What I really wanted to know about was the Erie Canal. It does talk about the canal, and that part was very interesting, but as the book goes on, it spends an inordinate part of the book talking about the beginnings of the Mormon religion. My main complaint was how much of the text was devoted to the religious aspect over the overall historical progression.
This book is a waste of time if you are interested in the building and history of the Erie Canal. The canal is really only relevant as a stage for religious evolution. I was totally disappointed in the disjointed way the writer skipped back and forth between religious figures and mixed their stories together until I did not always understand who he was writing about.I did not finish this book. Perhaps I failed to interpret the title properly but I expected a story of the building and use of the canal. I consider the book a total waste of time and $9.99!" I would give it one half star!
What a fascinating book! For those of us who grew up anywhere near the Erie Canal there is so much we were never taught. The narrative is amazing and loaded with info on the origin and building of the canal, the towns near it, the spiritual awakening in New York State and some of the strange happenings....like murder and strange forms of amusement.... that accompanied the building of the canal. In the late part of the book the narrative slows down and some of it could probably be left out, but this is a great read for the history buff as well as anyone interested in religion, building, and an engineering marvel.
